STYLE EXPLORATION: ZINE MAKING + ANIMATION
This project was focused on experimenting with different materials, exploring different methods, and discovering your design style through zine-making. I chose to research color, risograph, collage, fashion, and texture.
I started by creating designs using letters and glyphs to print on the risograph. I created the designs in InDesign and printed out each color as its own separate paper or "layer". I then made copies of each layer using the risograph. I then took small cuts of 3 different types of fabric and scanned them at high resolution. Finally, I cut out images from a Vogue Magazine to use in collage.
Once I had my printed designs, I collaged the digitally and made 5 completely different designs.
I then used these completed collages as a blueprint for my zine. I designed the zine so that risoprinted glyph design would be the background with the collaged images and random letter text on top. I mapped out this design in Adobe Illustrator again printed each color layer separately.
I found that a few of the colors I had originally used in my experiments were no longer available, so I made due with the resources I had. Once the colors were printed and I had collaged the magazine cut outs on top, I added a shiny cardstock as a backing to make the zine sturdier. In hindsight, I should have cut the zine in half and glued the middle pieces together to make the opening of it more seamless.
Despite all of my obstacles and the errors made, I'm really proud of how this turned out.
I then animated the zine using all of my assets. I wanted this animation to have a sketchy, punk feel to communicated the anger, while having some of the imagery (like the gingham background) contrast that anger.
