This week encompassed my favorite part of the design process - planning, ideating, and finding sources of inspiration! I had so much fun looking through magazines, revising my page map, and noting visuals that would be ideal to incorporate.

WEEK 5

PLAN

GRAPHICS

I took inspiration from old physical print magazines like Emigre, Baseline, Eye, and other materials. Experimental typography, collage, and overlapping textures and visual elements are something I would like to include in my designs to better support the copy.

EDITORIAL

Taking inspiration from the same magazines, I want to incorporate interesting compositions, overlays, grid structures, and experimental typography. Handwritten elements may be sprinkled throughout, and I hope to incorporate the use of letterpress or a typewriter to add to this feel.

EXPERIENTIAL

While watching the quintessential millennial movie, Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, I thought of the idea of incorporating the plot – a scavenger hunt to find out where a local band is playing an underground show – into my capstone project. I think incorporating some sort of event like this would physically bring community together in an exciting way.

PAGE MAP

I reorganized my page maps in a way that I feel will make more sense from start to finish throughout the magazine.

I also began sketching them out so that I could better visualize what things might look like. I started to frame the pages but realized I would be better served to have my copy and graphic experimentations ready first.

REFLECTION

My favorite part of the ideation and planning process is dreaming about where things can go. I'm excited to start implementing my ideas in a physical form.

Next week will encompass a presentation of my revised proposal and goals with all of this information provided. I hope to get a start on photographing and interviewing subjects for the magazine as well as finalizing the copy that has been written. Stay tuned!✨
