MICROPLASTICS: POSTER DESIGN
For this project we were tasked with creating a poster to submit to a competition. I chose to submit my poster to PosterFor__. in Category F: 17 UN SDGs Topics.
This project started with choosing different materials and ways to manipulate them. One of the materials I worked with was a Ziploc bag full of multi-colored beads. The action in which I needed to manipulate them was through the scanner. I experimented with various methods, including separating the beads and working with the negative space and moving the baggy on the bed while it scanned.
While this project was in progress, I was fortunate enough to attend the Iowa Nature Summit at Drake University. At the summit I learned so much about not only Iowa's water quality, but water quality around the world. A major issue in the quality of our water was microplastics. I knew this topic would be perfect to pair with my beads experiment, as the material is quite literally plastic.
I played with the style of the typography and the shapes of the faucet and hand in the poster and landed on a Saul Bass-esque style of illustration. I felt it gave the poster an eerie feeling. I then played with the 3D effects in Adobe Illustrator and felt that inflating these materials enhanced the message, making the illustrations look like inflated balloons.
I ultimately ended up receiving a Silver recognition in the PosterFor__. International Poster Contest and am very proud of the outcome.
